Characters

Bilbo Baggins: A Hobbit, a short human like person, who is the main character in this story. Bilbo liked living quietly in his home, like most hobbits he loves peace, comfort, food, drink, and security and enjoys living in his hole at Bag End, Underhill. He lived in a small town with many other hobbits, until one day he gets visitors. The wizard Gandolf choses Bilbo to go on a quest and with a group of dwarves, he leaves his home in search of gold taken by a fiersome dragon.
Gandolf: A wise and magical wizard, Gandolf comes and goes with the dwarves and Bilbo on their quest. He does not go because he has intrest in the gold, he goes for other reasons, which he mostly keeps to himself. He is very old and powerful, and always seems to know more than he tells.
Thorin: The leader of the dwarves and also the grandson of Thor who is a descendent of Thrain who was king under the mountain. Thrain and his people had a lot of treasure but it was stolen by Smaug the dragon. Thorin goes on a quest to get back the treasure and the throne. He obtains a map and a key to the mountain left to him by Thor.
Balin, Dwalin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori, Ori, Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin: The other twelve dwarves who go with Thorin, Gandalf, and Bilbo on their quest to find the treasure.
Goblins: The goblins are ugly and wicked creatures. They live in a cave in the Misty Mountains. They kidnapped the dwarves and Bilbo, who eventually escaped from them, but not before they killed some of the goblins and their leader.
Gollum: Gollum is a disgusting, slimy creature, who lives in the same cave as the goblins but stays to himself because the goblins fear him and the other way around. He talks to himself and is possesed by the ring of invisabilty that Bilbo steals from him.
Wargs: The wargs are wild wolves who chased bilbo, gandolf, and the dwarves into trees. Gandolf sets them on fire and chases them away bu they quickly come back with the goblins. They are rescued just in time by eagles.
Beorn: Beorn is a skin-changer, which means he can change into a bear. It allows him to attack other creatures, such as goblins. When Gandolf, Bilbo, and the dwarves are in trouble, they go to his house and he provides a place to stay for a few days, food, and ponies to ride to the edge of the forest.
Elvenking: He is the king of the elves who capture the dwarves while they are in the dark forest. Bilbo rescues them from the elvenking and they all escape by hiding in barrels and floating down the river.
Smaug: The dragon who lives underground in the Lonely Mountain. He watches the treasure that belongs to Thorin.
Bard: The man from Esgaroth who kills the dragon smaug.

Summary

The hobbit starts out with Bilbo Baggins a hobbit living in his home at Bag End Underhill. While he is at his quiet and peacful home thirteen dwarves, Thorin, Balin, Dwalin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori, Ori, Fili, Kili, Oin, and Gloin and Gandolf a wise old wizard come and take him along on a quest to find the dwarves long ago stolen treasure. The treasure was taken by Smaug, a dragon, many years ago, back when one of Thorins realitives was king under the mountain. On their journey they run into trolls, but all turns out ok because Gandolf stalls the trolls until sunrise when the trolls turn into stone. Then they reach Rivendell where they recieve new supplies. They return on there journey towards the misty mountains. One night it was raining heavily so they went into a cave to spend the night, but while they are there they are awoken by goblins. They are taken by the goblins to the great hall to be killed by the chief goblin but Gandolf kills him just in time. The dwarves and Gandolf fun into the tunnels and Bilbo gets left behind. He finds himself in a dark cavern where he finds a magical ring and a creature named Gollum. Bilbo doesn't know how to escape the cave and so Gollum challenges him to a riddle contest. If Bilbo wins he is to be taken out of the cave by Gollum, but if he should lose then Gollum gets to eat him. Bilbo wins but Gollum doesn't seem to want to help him because he finds out Bilbo has his ring. Bilbo runs out of the cavern with the ring on and realizes the ring makes him invisable. Bilbo escapes and returns to the dwarves and Gandolf outside.Not long after that they are chased into trees by wargs and then the goblins arrived. Giant eagles come and rescue them. The group then travels on to Mirkwood where they stay with Beorn a skin-changer who gives them food and shelter. After a few nights at Beorns house they travel to the forest but Gandolf does not come with them. The forrest is terribly dark and scary. Hidden inside are giant spiders and wood-elves. he dwarves get captured by both but Bilbo saves them from the spiders and after wandering through the wood-elves home for a few weeks, he manages to rescue the dwarves from there too. By riding barrels they make their way to the town of Esgaroth where they are treated like royalty. They spend about a week there and then head to the lony mountain where the treasure and Smaug the dragon awaits them. Once they reached the mountain they searced for the hidden entrance and eventually found it. They finally discover the deyhole in the door and open it. Bilbo is the first to enter and only to travel all the was into it. he finds the treasure and Smaug the dragon sleeping on it. He takes a golden cup back to show the dwarves. They are very excited once they see it, but when Smaug wakes and finds someone stole his treasure he throws a fit. Bilbo, with his ring on, goes and talks to Smaug. Smaug figures out where the dwarves and Bilbo have been, so he leaves to Esgaroth. Bilbo learns that the dragon has only one weak spot and that is on his left breast. Bilbo returns to the dwarves and tells them about Smaugs weak spot. the conversation is overheard by a bird sho then goes and tells this information to Bard. The dragon ends up destroying the town but he is killed by Bard. the wood-elves find out Smaug is dead and go in search of the treasure along with the people from Esgaroth. The dwarves find out that armies are coming for the treasure so they build a wall in the entrance to kiip people out. They also send a bird to Thorins relatives, who live nearby, to come and help fight. When the armies arrive they are willing to compromise but Thorin and the dwarves are not. So Bilbo steals the heart of the mountain, a large jewel that Thorin was looking for and gives it to the wood-elves. Thorin finds out and gets really mad at Bilbo. So there was to be a big battle between the two groups until Gandolf show up and tells everyone that the goblins and wargs are coming. They prepare to fight and when they goblins and wargs come they were ready, but there were more goblins than dwarves, and wood-elves. They almost lost but with the help of eagles and Beorn, the skin-changer, they won. Thorin, fighting for his treasure dies, but he first talks to Bilbo and tells him how sorry he is. Bilbo travels back home and discovers he is a changed hobbit.

Why Read This Book?This book has adventure and excitment. It is the the story of how Bilbo comes across a ring and uses its magic in his adventures.
The story starts with Bilbo having to go on a quest with thirteen dwarves and a wizard Gandalf the gray. At first he did not want to go but in the end decices to go. He faces many challenges and dangers and one of the largest battles at that time.
